چکیده

A MOTION CONTROL SCHEME FOR ANIMATING EXPRESSIVE ARM MOVEMENTS Diane M. Chi Supervisor: Norman I. Badler Current methods for gure animation involve a tradeo between the level of realism captured in the movements and the ease of generating the animations. We introduce a motion control paradigm that circumvents this tradeo |it provides the ability to generate a wide range of natural-looking movements with minimal user labor. E ort, which is one part of Rudolf Laban's system for observing and analyzing movement, describes the qualitative aspects of movement. Our motion control paradigm simpli es the generation of expressive movements by proceduralizing these qualitative aspects to hide the non-intuitive, quantitative aspects of movement. We build a model of E ort using a set of kinematic movement parameters that de nes how a gure moves between goal keypoints. Our motion control scheme provides control through E ort's fourdimensional system of textual descriptors, providing a level of control thus far missing from behavioral animation systems and o ering novel speci cation and editing capabilities on top of traditional keyframing and inverse kinematics methods. Since our E ort model is inexpensive computationally, E ort-based motion control systems can work in real-time. We demonstrate our motion control scheme by implementing EMOTE (Expressive MOTion Engine), a character animation module for expressive arm movements. EMOTE works with inverse kinematics to control the qualitative aspects of end-e ector speci ed movements. The user speci es general movements by entering a sequence of goal positions for each hand. The user then expresses the essence of the movement by adjusting sliders for the E ort motion factors: Space, Weight, Time, and Flow. EMOTE produces a wide range of expressive movements, provides an easy-to-use interface (that is more intuitive than joint angle interpolation curves or physical parameters), features interactive editing, and real-time motion generation.

Pose estimation is a process to identify how a human body and/or individual limbs are configured in a given scene. Hand pose estimation is an important research topic which has a variety of applications in human-computer interaction (HCI) scenarios, such as gesture recognition, animation synthesis and robot control. However, capturing the hand motion is quite a challenging task due to its high ...

A Real-time Motion Tracking Wireless System for Upper Limb Exosuit Based on Inertial Measurement Units and Flex Sensors (TECHNICAL NOTE)

This paper puts forward a real-time angular tracking (motion capture) system for a low cost upper limb exosuit based on sensor fusion; which is integrated by an elastic sleeve-mitten, two inertial measurement units (IMU), two flex sensors and a wireless communication system. The device can accurately detect the angular position of the shoulder (flexion-extension, abduction-adduction and interna...

Copying Behaviour of Expressive Motion

In this paper we present an agent that can analyse certain human fullbody movements in order to respond in an expressive manner with copying behaviour. Our work focuses on the analysis of human full-body movement for animating a virtual agent, called Greta, able to perceive and interpret users’ expressivity and to respond properly. Our system takes in input video data related to a dancer moving...

Research Statement for Lucas Kovar

My research interests have revolved around creating realistic animated humans. Animated humans are important to a variety of applications, including: entertainment, where they appear as characters in games and as special effects in movies; training simulations, which are used by the military to prepare soldiers and by industry to instruct workers in using equipment; and visualization aids, such...

Recreation of spontaneous non-verbal behavior on a synthetic agent EVA

This paper presents a novel process of transferring the human-generated communicative behavior onto an embodied conversational agent. The aim of our work is to build a high-resolution motion dictionary based on empirical analysis of non-verbal behavior performed in multi-speaker informal dialogues. The verbal and non-verbal behavior is recreated by using this motion dictionary and on pure, unpr...
